4years Vs 28 years in power
Longevity in power by a single individual should not be assumed as a benchmark for good leadership. Late Thomas Sankara in 4 years transformed Burkina Faso, The improvement in the lives of Burkina Faso’s people was astounding as a result of Sankara’s policies, while closer to the great lakes region one man has been grappling to transform Uganda for unsuccessful 28 years.
In 4 years Thomas Sankara achieved the following:
Eradicated corruption and renamed the country to the Land of Incorruptible People
Boosting agricultural production by redistributing land from feudal landlords to peasants. Massive land distribution, fertilizer and irrigation saw agricultural productivity boom; “hunger was a thing of the past”.
Suspending rural poll taxes and domestic rents.
Establishing an ambitious road and rail construction program to "tie the nation together".
Ended the privileges of many tribal leaders. Sankara dis appropriated the country’s economic elite who controlled most of the arable land and real estate at that time. The fields were divided between subsistence farmers and in the cities social housing was constructed
Improved the status of the women, He saw the emancipation of women as vital to breaking the hold of the feudal system on the country. This included recruiting women into all professions, including the military and the government.
Improved the quality of education in a country which had had over 90% illiteracy
Improved public health, the immunization of millions of children.
In a brief period of 4 years, Burkina Faso shone brightly, a stunning example of what can be achieved even in one of the world’s most impoverished countries.
On the contrary Musevenis 28 year tenure has very little tangible evidence of socioeconomic –political transformation of Uganda, policies have largely remained in paper. Uganda at the moment is experiencing epic levels of:
Corruption
Impunity
Poverty
Breakdown in service delivery
Roads that are periodically washed away
A defunct railway service
Moral decadence
Why on earth should Museveni persuade the unsuspecting citizens to grant him another 5 year mandate?
Thomas Sankara once said " The French revolution taught us the rights of man".
