Voice of reason

Mr.Okuk Owera

I want to borrow some words from Martin Luther king Jr. to express a situation we now face in Uganda. For we must all learn to live together as brothers, or we will all perish together as fools. We should stop to wait on time. Somewhere along the way -- Somewhere we must come to see that human progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability as is happening in Uganda today.

It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals who are willing to be coworkers with God to subdue the extant anarchy, blatant abuse of human rights and the lawlessness perpetuated by the police and armed terror squads. And without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the primitive forces of social stagnation. And so we must help time and we must realize that the time is always ripe to do right. Oppose dictatorship now and continue to hold the fire burning. If you think your time will come, you will instead expend it. It has happened to me just like many others I have seen admitting in writing. I was asked to name my president when I was in primary school and my answer was/is the same as what my children now give – YK Museveni! No.

Legislators have failed to deal with the issue because most of them think about themselves. Could we agree that we elect a different team to steer the country out of this deadlock and leave the young beneficiaries agape-those who are given monies to brutalise their compatriots?. I’m sure those who propagated the status quo a decade and over ago are now agape of the situation they have caused the country. For example, there is no difference between the public order management act being used to detain the Amamas and the emergency detention law used to detain the Ibingiras in the late sixties! Remember, both Amama and Ibingira among others supported the laws! It is the role of Ugandans to shape their destiny. And if Ugandans should succeed in this struggle, we must refuse to be identified by ethnic balkanization with which the government continue to propagate by endlessly reducing and identifying district and county boundaries by ethnic, tribal and family lines. And when you begin to change the false habits of the dreaded regime, pretty soon our attitudes will be changed and our hearts will be changed to love one another as we love ourselves. You will stop looking at one another as a northerner, westerner, Muganda, easterner etc.

We did it in Kyambogo University 9 years ago and it worked. Because in a University, you get a population representative of the country in outlook and so we can do it for the country as well. Therein lies our collective victory and we shall be free from then on. God bless Uganda
